I’m coming back home from picking up a few things at the vet, and I notice a Tesla pass me, then see the “Model S ” on the rear bumper. “Huh,” I think to myself, “I wonder if those fitment issues are as bad as the internet says.”
I pull up alongside it at the stop light, look over to the right, and see:
a window trim alignment issue easily noticeable from across my car and the gap between us.

That paint job looks a bit interesting as well.

How so? The paint seemed fine to me.

That’s a lot of orange peel.

My boss has a brand new X and it gives me OCD when I walk by it in the morning. The door handles, the trim and the aero left up while he’s parked just freaks me out.

Fun fact: the only thing that won’t fit in a Tesla panel gap is Elon Musk’s ego.

But will it fit in Mars?

I feel like ora nge peel is the norm lately. Are there any normal cars that come with flat paint anymore?

The fourth-gen Odyssey (one of the most common vehicles on the road in my area) has virtually the same exact issue where the front sail panel chrome ( just aft of the A pillar) meets the chrome trim on the door.
And that’s Honda. On a vehicle they made for 6 years and hundreds of thousands of examples . And it never got corrected. By a company that wrote the book on anal retentiveness in auto design and manufacturing.
It sounds minor, but it can’t be unseen.
Not the best pic from the web, but you can almost see the kink/gap from a distance. Up close, it’s very obvious — just above the mirror.

I think the only completely flat paint might be with higher end cars like the S Class. But in the normal realm, I don’t notice any orange peel on either of my e-Golfs, nor do I notice any on my MKVI Golf, and I looked. But I’m not saying their paint is completely flat. But it looks a hell of a lot better than that Tesla which is probably twice the price of my Golfs.

Good thing all the Odysseys around here are older than that.
Honestly I wish everyone would stop with the c hrome window trim. I think it looks tacky.

I passed a trailer full of them in Virginia over the weekend, was surprised to see them being transported on the Interstate without any protective wrapping - though, I suppose, they could have been getting moved from a shorter distance than from the factory.

I see Model Xs all the time in Portland with the spoilers left up when they park. It always strikes me as a bit obnoxious.

I think that’s a Model S. Model 3 door handles are fatter at one end. Also the Model 3 doesn’t have a model name badge, whereas the Model S says so on the back.

It seems very ripply, especially for black. Might just be the lighting.

I thought it was dirty.

Yeah it was an S. Even worse!

I’m about ready to plasti-dip all of it once I have some downtime. Too few minivans with any mods, even subtle stuff
